Nobel laureate Katalin Karikó was celebrated with standing ovations and applause at the meeting of the American Academy of Medicine in Washington, D.C. on 7 October 2023. In addition to the world-renowned mRNA researcher, Kornélia Polyák, cancer researcher and alumna of the University of Szeged, was also elected a member of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM).
As the inventor of the modified messenger RNA used in modern vaccines (Covid19), Katalin Karikó was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine together with Drew Weissman, her fellow American research colleague, on the 2nd of October 2023. The announcement of the Nobel Prize winner, Katalin Karikó, one of the most influential scientists of our time is a source of pride for her alma mater, the University of Szeged community.
A returning, popular program series, the Autumn Cultural Festival, organized by the SZTE Cultural Office, is about to start at the University of Szeged.
The spectacular opening ceremony of the 35th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI 2023) took place at the József Attila Study and Information Centre of the University of Szeged. IOI is the world's most prestigious competitive programming event for high school IT talents. The competition, which will last until Sunday, has attracted 360 contestants from 90 countries and around 300 international guides and guests.

On 19 April 2023, Katalin Karikó, Professor at the University of Szeged, was elected a member of the most prestigious scientific society in the German-speaking world. The world-renowned biochemist spoke about the miraculous mRNA molecule at Leopoldina.

The United States' biggest cash prize in science was handed out at an award ceremony in Hollywood, where world-renowned researchers, including Katalin Karikó, professor of the University of Szeged, were celebrated by movie and media stars and other celebrities.
Team guides are expected to participate in the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI 2023), which will be held in Szeged, Hungary, from 28 August to 4 September 2023.
The University of Szeged, which has been Hungary's best university for years in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings, has achieved high rankings in the recently published lists of sciences and disciplines.
More than 400 foreign participants registered for the Online Open Day of the University of Szeged 2023, organised by the Office for International Admissions and Cooperation on 9 March 2023. Two representatives of the University of Szeged, Dr Leona Kovács-Jerney, Head of the International Office of the University of Szeged and Diana Katsidis, senior international officer, participated in the Eurasia Education Fair organised by Begin Group. The promotional fair was held on 13 and 19 October in two locations, Baku, Azerbaijan and Tbilisi, Georgia.
A sustainability rankings has been compiled for higher education for the first time this year by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Rankings in the UK. Only three Hungarian universities were included in the ranking, one of which was the University of Szeged, which ranked between 381 and 400th overall. The University of Szeged also scored highly on the performance indicators used to compile the list: it was the best Hungarian institution in terms of the impact of education, sharing of knowledge, equal opportunities and quality of life.
Some plans can be postponed but not when it comes to higher education and gaining knowledge. Higher education is a main pillar of ones future and the University of Szeged is keen on providing quality education and expanding the horizons of internationalization.
Dr. Katalin Karikó, Biochemist, and her fellow US researcher Dr. Drew Weissman have received the 2022 Empowering Research and Discovery Award. The award from the National Disease Research Interchange (NDRI) organisation recognised the developers for their contributions to mRNA technology and the COVID-19 vaccines. The award ceremony was held in Philadelphia's iconic building in "The Union Legal". Katalin Karikó, Research Professor at the University of Szeged, was greeted with standing ovation and applause.

Every year, the number of international students at the University of Szeged is increasing. During the 2021-2022 academic year nearly 5000 foreign students from 115 countries are pursuing their studies at the University of Szeged. The institution aims to further increase the number of international students in the spirit of multiculturalism.
The University of Szeged has been ranked the best Hungarian university in this year's Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) University world ranking. The result acknowledges the university’s outstanding national and international educational programmes, its research activity and artistic performance. The institution managed to maintain its 551st-560th position among a significantly higher number of nominees.

Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the UK-based international ranking agency has published its latest international rankings for higher education institutions in emerging European and Central Asian countries. The University of Szeged was ranked 29th in this year's ranking and remains one of the best universities in the country.

The Keio Medical Science Prize has been awarded to Katalin Karikó "for the discovery of Specific RNA Modification Leading to mRNA Vaccine Development", as announced on 15 September 2021, Japan time. The researcher, who holds a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Szeged, will receive a certificate of merit, medal, and a monetary award of 10 million yen for her work.
