According to the statement published by Hungary's National Police Headquarters (ORFK) on 11 May, it is possible for students (who need to comply with examination obligations arising from their student status) to submit a leniency application for entering Hungary during the state of emergency.
On 11th March 2020 the government of Hungary declared the state of emergency due to the pandemic situation. Thus we regret to inform you that the Graduation Ceremony of the Faculty of Science and Informatics scheduled for 5th July 2020 has been cancelled.
More than 30 research health and life science related projects have been initiated at the SZTE during the past two months to combat coronavirus. The University of Szeged participates a promising research to prepare the clinical testing of an antiviral treatment, furthermore the institution has launched a genetics research and is contributing to the development of mass testing methods for the novel coronavirus.
In accordance with the resolutions of the Ministry of Human Capacities of Hungary, an epidemic hospital and center has been established in the Western park of Albert Szent-Györgyi Healthcare Centre of the University of Szeged, widely known as Hospital no. II (II-es kórház), at 57 Kálvária sgt., Szeged.
In several Hungarian press agencies, information has come to light that I am one of the citizens of Szeged who became ill as a result of a new type of coronavirus infection. The news is true.
Application Information in Epidemic Times
In addition to the health student hotline launched on the 10th of March, a chatbot has also been launched to inform university students at the SZTE. On the University of Szeged Facebook page, Berci-bot provides information in Hungarian and English on distance education, graduation and dormitory placement.
Sixth year General Medicine students, as well as Dentistry and Pharmacy students may continue their clinical and professional practice during the period of general prohibition of practical trainings. Students participating in doctoral programmers and have completed the complex examination and students with a public servant status with the University may enter the buildings of the Institution for work purposes.
In order to prevent the spread of novel coronavirus disease, measures concerning employment have been introduced at the University of Szeged until further notice of the management.
With regard to the state of emergency ordered by the Government of Hungary on the 11th March, the University of Szeged will switch to distance education on the 23rd March until withdrawal, after the spring break. Posts in connection with distance education as well as useful tools illustrated with introductory videos have been published on the CooSpace information scenes.
The Ministry of Human Capacities of Hungary has ordered that all interventions not requiring immediate medical care shall be postponed from the 16th March 2020 until the state of emergency is terminated. In order to implement the measure, the University of Szeged immediately took the necessary steps.
The areas affected as indicated on the website of the National Public Health Service of Hungary are: Italy, China, Iran, South Korea, Iran and Heinsberg district of Germany. Passengers arriving from the abovementioned areas showing symptoms of coronavirus shall be considered as suspicious/under investigation and the procedure of the National Public Health Service of Hungary shall be followed, including the application of quarantine and laboratory testing.
Missions to foreign countries – regardless of the destination – cannot be ordered or authorized, university citizens are advised to delay their private travels abroad and citizens of foreign countries are not allowed to reside on campus. According to the Government Decree, healthcare workers shall only be allowed to leave the territory of Hungary with the permission of the Minister responsible for the relevant sector.
In order to prevent the further spread of the virus, preventive and protective measures have been introduced at the University of Szeged. Organizing and hosting an event with more than 100 attendees indoors and more than 500 attendees outdoors is prohibited. The individual written (electronic) permission of the Coronavirus Operative Committee is necessary for the organization of events with 50-100 attendees indoors and 150-500 attendees outdoors.
An educational break has been ordered for the 12th and 13th March and the Spring Break period of the University will be between the 14th of March 2020 (Saturday) and 22nd of March 2020 (Sunday). The University of Szeged will switch to distance education until withdrawal. All university students of Hungarian citizenship is required to move out of university dormitories and return home by the 13th of March.
Crucial information and important measures concerning the coronavirus disease are now available 24/7 via a student information line from the 10th of March at the University of Szeged. Further measures have been introduced at the University of Szeged regarding the spread of the coronavirus originating from China. In order to protect the general health of the university community of 30,000 members, the Rector and Chancellor of the SZTE issued a circular calling upon members to refrain from work and attending lectures if returning from an area affected and travelling to such areas shall be avoided.
The Summer School on Image Processing will be held between July 9 and July 18 2020, in Szeged, Hungary. SSIP is organized annually for graduate and PhD students interested in image processing. Students and teachers are invited to participate from all over the world.
138 international students started their studies in the spring semester of the 2019/2020 academic year. 131 students arrived to the SZTE under the Erasmus+ program and 7 students under the Makovecz program. The integration of the students who hold a scholarship is assisted by the SZTE International Mobility Office of the Directorate for International and Public Relations between the 3rd and the 5th of February, 2020.
For two days, representatives of the universities of the European Alliance for Global Health will be making discussions at the University of Szeged. At the English-language conference, partners will describe tasks of each working packages and outline their future plans.

The number of international students of the University of Szeged is continuously rising. More than 4,000 students from 115 countries around the world are carrying out their studies at the SZTE. Compared to previous years the increase in the number in the headcount is significant in domestic relations.
The University of Szeged remains the greenest higher education institution in Hungary. According to the 2019 GreenMetric world ranking, SZTE stepped ahead to the 74th place. Compared to last year, the number of international participants increased this year: in 2019, 780 institutions filled out the green questionnaire.
According to the latest HVG higher education rankings, the University of Szeged is the best University out of the capital in Hungary. The SZTE was ranked at a high level in both institutional and educational rankings.

A celebratory Session of the Senate was held on the 9th of November 2019 to mark the Day of the University at the SZTE. In addition to Senator Honoris Causa and Doctor Honoris Causa titles, Pro Universitate, Kunó Klebelsberg and Pro Laudanda Promotione Awards and other recognition awards were given.
His Excellency Iain Lindsay, British Ambassador to Hungary delivered a lecture at the University of Szeged on the 11th November, 2019. The presentation gave perspective on British-Hungarian relations and predictions on what might happen after Brexit, how it would affect education as well as Hungarians studying and living in the United Kingdom.

Enrolling international students of SZTE are welcomed by the leadership of the University on the 30th of August and on the 6th of September at József Attila Study and Information Centre. Among others, various cultural and recreation activities are welcoming them this week.
Szeged becomes the focal point of attosecond science between 1 and 5 July where around 400 researchers arriving from 29 countries joins together to discuss the latest results of attosecond science and technology.
