SZTE Still Among the Greenest Universities in Hungary

The University of Szeged has improved its ’green’ indicators; according to the world ranking of GreenMetric, SZTE took the 88th place in 2017 – compared to the 107th place last year, moreover, a hundred times more institutions filled in the ’green’ form in this year’s survey. SZTE is on the 42nd place on the European Green-list and it is the greenest university among the Hungarian higher educational institutions.

The University of Szeged is the 88th on the GreenMetric list in 2017 out of 619 institutions of 76 countries. The popularity of the top list established by the Indonesian University is continuously growing: the first call in 2010 was addressed by 95 institutions from 34 countries, while 516 universities of 74 countries made their contribution in 2016.

Except for the University of Istanbul, only West European institutions came before SZTE on the GreenMetric list. Out of the top 7 ’greenest’ universities, 5 institutions are located in England – SZTE has been proved better than the 79% of the institution marked on the list of green universities in Europe.

Among the universities of Hungary, SZTE – with its 88th place – significantly beat the Hungarian field; the University of Pécs finished on the 179th, Eötvös Loránd University secured the 322nd place on the ’green’ list.

The evaluation focuses on the following main areas: location and infrastructure, waste disposal, energy and water management, transportation and education – according to the ranking by categories, SZTE is highly effective in waste disposal, getting 87% out of the maximum score; however, there is still room for improvement as for education to provide guidance in the future.
