Biochemical Engineering BSc

Title of the programme: Biochemical Engineering BSc [Bioengineering]

Degree: BSc

Duration of the course: 7 semesters

Language of tuition: English

The aim of the programme is to:

The training of bioengineers who, through their modern theoretical and practical knowledge of natural sciences, become capable of performing independent organizational and management tasks in the scientific life and various fields of the economy and industry. With the knowledge provided by the training, they can also become suitable for the second cycle of the training to continue.

Bioengineers will be prepared

  • for the safe and environmentally conscious operation of biological/biotechnological systems, for the provision of services and commercial tasks related to the field of expertise,
  • to carry out laboratory, semi-industrial and industrial tasks, to learn new methodologies, to solve occupational safety tasks,
  • to perform more complex tasks, to apply knowledge in practice in the field corresponding to the chosen specialization,
  • for the performance of sub-tasks in the development and design of technological systems, the development of new processes and products, research in chemical and related sciences,
  • to use the computer knowledge and databases necessary to perform the tasks,
  • to get to know and understand new processes, products and systems that were previously unknown,
  • to understand the technical documentation.

What does a bioengineering student learn during the 7 semesters of the basic course?

  • Basic knowledge of natural sciences: mathematics, physics, general chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, biochemistry, informatics;
  • economic and human knowledge: micro- and macroeconomics, management and business economics, business law;
  • professional core material: functioning of biological systems; applications of physical chemistry and materials science; measurement and control technology; mechanical engineering and operations; technology; additional knowledge required for specialization, which is part of the core material.

The basic education of bioengineering students is completed by a longer professional practice completed outside the institution. Bioengineering training is basically carried out by the departments and institutes of the Faculty of Science and Informatics and the Faculty of Engineering.

Optional specializations

Two specializations can be chosen within the bachelor's degree:

  • Applied biotechnology
  • Food qualifier

Students who have obtained a BSc degree in bioengineering become capable for the application of genetic-, molecular biological- and chemical-based technologies in the broadly understood biotechnology industries (pharmaceutical and food industry) and other related fields (food and nutrition science, agrobiology, environmental and health protection) that fall within the contact area of biology, chemistry and engineering sciences. They will be able to manage the technological processes and the personnel who operate them, perform analytical tests, production and final quality control, participate in research and development, planning activities, and the planning of technological procedures. They can also apply their knowledge of bioengineering in services, agriculture, industry, trade and public administration.

They can effectively communicate the results of their work to both professional and non-professional circles, using IT tools, even in a foreign language. However, the undisclosed purpose of the bachelor's degree is also to prepare students for participation in the corresponding master's degree.

What awaits the students after obtaining the BSc degree?

  • They can be laboratory "operators" - in research institutes, food industry, healthcare, pharmaceutical industry, environmental protection.
  • Performing tasks requiring bioengineering knowledge - in institutions, industry, services and trade.
  • Master's degree (MSc)
