The Doctoral School of Environmental Sciences (KTDI) is a functional educational unit operating at the Faculty of Science and Informatics of the University of Szeged (SZTE) with the approval of the Hungarian Accreditation Committee (MAB), which provides training for the award of a PhD degree in the field of environmental sciences. Potential students of the Doctoral School are mainly graduates with degrees in environmental science and environmental engineering, as well as those with degrees in biology, bioengineering, physics, earth sciences, agricultural engineering, and chemistry. The head of the Doctoral School is Prof. Zoltán Kónya (konya@chem.u-szeged.hu), and the administrator is Dr. Tünde Alapi (alapi@chem.u-szeged.hu)
The Doctoral School's research program consists of the following programs:
The research topics are published on the website of the National Doctoral Council.
The aim of the organized training at the Doctoral School of Environmental Sciences is to develop students' ability to conduct independent scientific work in the field of environmental sciences. The theoretical courses include introductory courses that provide general preparation and introduce students to the fundamental biological, physical, geological, and chemical aspects of environmental protection and nature conservation. The other part of the courses consists of special courses in environmental science and is closely linked to the thematic research topics offered at the School, and proposed by the supervisors. In keeping with the spirit of the University, as well as the multidisciplinary nature of environmental science, the Doctoral School also offers students the opportunity to take courses offered by other doctoral schools.
Research work is an essential part of the training program. This mainly takes place within the framework of the so-called tutoring system, i.e., students join one of the research groups of the doctoral school and, within that group, a researcher (supervisor) who has the appropriate professional background, infrastructure, and funding, which together provide a satisfactory guarantee for the successful completion of the work. This part of the training also includes writing publications and giving professional presentations at scientific forums, such as conferences. The doctoral school strives to involve students participating in the organized training program in the work of other research groups, both in Hungary and abroad.
An essential part of students' professional training is to participate in postgraduate education by teaching in practical classes and seminars. The Doctoral School provides opportunities for this and expects students to participate in teaching activities for at least two semesters.
