SZTE’s Career Office: A Strategic Bridge Between Students and the Labor Market

SZTE’s Career Office: A Strategic Bridge Between Students and the Labor Market

In 2025, the Career Office of the University of Szeged conducted a comprehensive labor market survey as part of the University’s broader digital development project. The study engaged four key stakeholder groups – student interns, companies hosting interns, graduating students entering the labor market, and the employers who hire them – and was carried out by the office’s own team. The findings provide practical insights that can be directly applied to the university’s operations and future development.

The results of the Career Office’s recent survey clearly show that students today approach their careers more consciously and strategically than in the past. Internships are no longer viewed merely as a formal requirement but as a meaningful professional investment. Students increasingly seek real responsibilities, mentoring, opportunities for growth, and fair working conditions. Among graduating students, stability, transparent career paths, and a supportive organizational culture have emerged as key priorities. In an increasingly uncertain economic environment, predictability has become more important – while the desire for professional development remains just as strong.

At the same time, companies are seeking energetic young professionals who are digitally proficient and quick to learn. Employers value the fresh perspectives and adaptability that recent graduates bring, but they also have clear expectations: independence, a strong sense of responsibility, problem-solving ability, and effective communication skills. The research also shows that most companies hire only a limited number of new graduates each year – typically in fields such as IT, engineering, business, and HR – and increasingly view internship programs as an important pipeline for future talent.

Within this dynamic environment, the role of the SZTE Career Office remains crucial. The office is not merely an intermediary platform but an active strategic partner. More than half of the university’s corporate partners advertise their entry-level positions through the Career Office’s channels, clearly demonstrating the office’s reach and professional credibility. In practice, the Career Office ensures the structured presentation of job and internship opportunities, organizes in-person networking events, supports company presentations, and helps employers reach the right student audience through targeted communication.

One of the study’s most important conclusions is that attracting and retaining talent is not determined by salary alone. Clear expectations, transparent competency frameworks, and early engagement between employers and students are equally critical. In response, the SZTE Career Office supports both students and companies through career counseling, preparatory workshops, labor market briefings, and data-driven feedback. Beyond providing information, the office offers strategic guidance: it helps students develop realistic expectations regarding salaries and career paths, while also assisting companies in refining and strengthening their recruitment strategies.

The results of the 2025 labor market survey highlight the fact that where cooperation with the SZTE Career Office is intentional and well structured, the integration of recent graduates is more effective and long-term commitment is stronger. By aligning research, service development, and partner collaboration, the Career Office is cultivating an ecosystem in which students enter the labor market better prepared, while companies are able to make more informed recruitment decisions. This deliberate, data-driven approach represents one of the University of Szeged’s strongest competitive advantages in the region.

The survey was conducted with support provided within the framework of the Complex Digital Model Change – Intelligent Gear Change project (project ID: RRF-2.1.2-21-2022-00012), which forms part of Hungary’s Recovery and Resilience Plan.
