Béla Szőkefalvi-Nagy Medal, year 2024

The Bolyai Institute of the University of Szeged is pleased to announce that the Béla Szőkefalvi-Nagy Medal for the year 2024 has been awarded to Javad Mashreghi Professor at Laval University, Quebec, Canada. The official award ceremony will be held at 10:00 am on 13 December 2024 (Friday) in Bolyai Hall of the Bolyai Institute.

Javad Mashreghi is a leading researcher in several areas of function spaces and operator theory. He has achieved seminal results in Hilbert and Banach spaces of analytic functions on the unit disk (structure theorems, analytic properties of functions from these spaces, zero sets of functions, polynomial approximation on these spaces) as well as in linear operators (notably structure theorems of operator classes, spectral properties, cyclic vectors, invariant subspaces, and particular operator classes such as Toeplitz, Cesàro, multiplication, and shifts).

He is well-known worldwide for his numerous books, having authored 1 monograph and 12 textbooks written for researchers and graduate students entering new fields, offering a thorough summary of the subject. According to MathSciNet, he has 135 publications with 1,198 citations across 759 publications.

Javad Mashreghi has received several awards and distinctions. He currently holds a Giovanni Prodi Chair (University of Würzburg, Germany) and a Canada Research Chair (Laval University). He is a lifetime AMS Fellow, a lifetime Fields Institute Fellow, and a lifetime CMS Inaugural Fellow. He was a Fulbright Research Chair at Vanderbilt University and a recipient of the IEEE Prize Paper Award. From 2020 to 2022, he served as President of the Canadian Mathematical Society.

In the past three years, Javad Mashreghi has published four important papers in Acta Szeged. One of these papers contributed significantly to the 100th-anniversary issue of the journal, and he was one of the speakers at the meeting celebrating that memorable event.

The Béla Szőkefalvi-Nagy Medal was founded by Erzsébet Szőkefalvi-Nagy in memory of Béla Szőkefalvi-Nagy, who served as the Editor-in-Chief of Acta Scientiarum Mathematicarum from 1946 to 1981. The Medal, on which the engraving is made by the sculptor András Lapis, is awarded annually by the Bolyai Institute to honour a distinguished mathematician who has published significant, deep results in these Acta.

The official award ceremony will be held at 10:00 am on 13 December 2024 (Friday) in Bolyai Hall of the Bolyai Institute.

On this occasion Professor Javad Mashreghi will deliver a lecture entitled

Polynomial Approximation: Classical and Emerging Schemes.
