New Ranking of Universities: Eight Hungarian Institutions Make the List

Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has published a new ranking of universities, this time rating those of the emerging European and Central Asian countries. Eight Hungarian universities made the list of 2018, SZTE is ranked as the best among them.

SZTE ranked 27th, the Budapest University of Economics and Technology 28th, and the Eötvös Loránd University came in 30th in QS’ EECA regional ranking 2018 that was published this week. The University of Debrecen ranked 35th, the Corvinus University of Budapest 45th, the University of Pécs 63rd, but the University of Miskolc and the University of West Hungary also made the list and ranked 110th and 201st-250th respectively. The latter’s faculties operate as part of the University of Sopron and the Eötvös Loránd University following this year’s partition.

Russian Universities are the Most Successful

Quacquarelli Symonds has been editing this list since 2014. Among others it compares "emerging” European and Central Asian universities, which –according to experts – can’t compete with US and British universities leading global rankings for a number of different reasons (such as being in a traditional elite university).

Just like last year, Lomonosov Moscow State University came in first this year, followed by Novosibirsk State University and the biggest and oldest higher education institution of Estonia, the University of Tartu.

Saint Petersburg University, Charles University of Prague, the Czech Technical University in Prague, the University of Warsaw, Boğaziçi University and the Middle East Technical University in Turkey, and the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University have made it into the top 10.

Ranking Criterias

Universities were ranked based on eight different criteria including academic reputation, recognition on the labor market, faculty/student ratio, foreign students/professors ratio, the institution’s online visibility and the number of PhD professors.
